We’ve all done it—jumped to conclusions, misread a situation, or assumed the worst. And before we know it, misunderstandings snowball, leaving us with strained relationships and unnecessary frustration. One of the greatest threats to meaningful connections is the gap between what we think we know and what is actually true.
Not long ago, I was convinced a product I used was missing a key feature. A few people in a Facebook group agreed, so I didn’t think twice. For months, I criticised it, only to discover, rather embarrassingly, that the feature had been there all along. All it took was one direct message to the company to realise my mistake.
That moment taught me something vital: assumptions are relationship killers.
Back in the University, I assumed a fellow student was arrogant and standoffish, based on how they interacted in class. For a long time, I avoided talking to them. But when I finally mustered the courage to talk to him? Turns out, he was the kindest soul. He was just very passionate. We became fast friends by the end.
When something doesn’t sit right with you, whether it’s something I’ve said, a post I’ve shared, or a comment that rubbed you the wrong way, please tell me. A quick, kind, private message can clear up misunderstandings before they spiral.
Because here’s the truth: in recent times, my posts aren’t personal digs. They are inspired by books, courses, events (like WP Accessibility Day), and conversations that spark my curiosity. If something feels like an attack, it was not my intention.
As Anne-Mieke Bovelett wisely said, “come from a place of yes and come with love.” This approach transforms potential conflicts into opportunities for understanding.
Next time you feel misunderstood or disagree with someone, pause and take a deep breath. Then, reach out. Ask them for clarification. You might be surprised by what you learn and the bridges you build along the way.
Let’s create a community where understanding wins over assumptions.
